We have learned that Pat Brown Jones passed away Tuesday morning. Pat's husband Ernie called Joe Iozzi to let us know.  As soon as we know of final arrangements we will post here.
I know we will all miss Pat. She was one of the best of the best class ever.
I have repeated a note she sent to the class 4 years ago.

The Survivors, Tom Kulesza and Bill Alberta lift a glass, after Gerry Wormuth needed a transfusion in the hospital, and Lee Woodmansee was attacked by a pit bull, also ending up at the hospital, these two were the only ones left standing besides John Reed who took the picture. The Annual Delaware River class outings are getting to be a dangerous proposition. Fortunately, both Gerry and Lee are doing well and on the mend. Denny Swartout, Dixie Coe and Dale Whitmore dodged a bullet. They couldn't make the regatta this year.

Jerry Wormuth made a donation of $196.40 to cover the cost of this year's Class of '64 Senior Award in Honor of Wellington and Helen Lester.
This amount is in addition to the $1,500 he previously donated a couple of months ago.

If you know any grads in this year's graduating class that could use $196.40 send them to:

If you have a grand child, niece, nephew, or other descendent of the class of 1964, graduating from Hancock this year, please have them fill out an Application for the Class Award of $196.40 on this page. The Award is given each year in Honor of Helen and Wellington Lester. Past winners were:

Christopher Gross 2022 winner.                  Michael Makowski 2021 winner.

Bill Alberta and Gerry Wormuth have made a substantial donation to endow The Wellington and Helen Lester Award.

The class of '64 has opened a bank account at SFCU that includes a checking account, and 2 year, 3% CD. It is hoped that many class members will add to the endowment and make a contribution to the fund. $675 is currently in the Flower Fund.
This amount will easily fund this year's Wellington and Helen Lester Award
recipient, regardless of the amount, either $500 or $196.40.

Anyone wishing to donate to either, The Flower Fund, which provides flowers and/or help with funeral expenses to fallen classmates, or The Wellington and Helen Lester Award, which makes a yearly award to a graduating HCS senior, (with preference given to class descendents), can forward their checks to:

Hello Everyone,

It saddens me to see that the Rood Family Homestead has burned, it had been in our family since the 1800. My siblings Tony, Kathy, Vicky and I have had so many fond memories of growing up and it saddens us all. I am alive and well living in Onalaska, Texas with my husband Bill. I am still working weekends as a nurse in the San Jacinto County Jail. I was just in PA and MD visiting my son and daughter and grandchildren. Do you recall the surf songs, well I finally checked surfing off my bucket list when I did this in Hawaii recently. When is the next reunion, so we can celebrate our lives and chat fondly of those that have departed.
Much Love - Aliana Rood Farthing

We have learned that former classmate Gary Adams has died. He was living in Spearfish, South Dakota when he passed away on Thursday, October 27, at Rapid City Monument Hospital. Gary did not graduate with us as he left the class in the 10th, or 11th grade when his family moved away. He had three brothers, and two sisters, which some of you may remember.

What does a 76 year old man do with himself after retirement? If you're Tom Kulesza, you join a band and sing. Along with his wife, Joanne, Tom can be found singin' the blues with the band, The Lanterns. This picture is from a gig they did at a brewery in Lake Wallenpaupack, PA.

Listen to the band's recordings at YouTube by clicking here.
You will leave the hcs1964.com web site, and the link will take you to YouTube.
Watch this space for Tom's next gig.

Below is something that I just posted on the Class Face Book page. Bill Alberta has, along with Sherry his wife, developed a huge non-profit organization that helps well over a thousand families each year in the Ithaca area.

Back in 1989, Bill and Sherry started a non-profit called “The Elves”, that provides Christmas gifts and winter clothing to over a thousand children in the Ithaca area where they live.

Here’s a description of the program: “The Elves Program helps children in great need in nearly 40 elementary schools. Through our Winter Program we provided new clothing and toys for 1,168 children last year and hope to equal that number this year. Here’s how it works: nurses and social workers identify the children who are in greatest need. They use a form to provide information on each boy and girl to be sponsored and give the forms to Elf Leaders. Leaders then distribute the profiles to individuals, families, or groups who want to sponsor a child. Sponsors (Elves) purchase items, making sure that each child receives every item on a checklist - socks, underwear, a new outfit, pajamas, a hat & gloves, and a toy. All gifts are new and cost $125 - $150 per child. Elf Leaders deliver the bags of gifts to the school where they are picked up by parents.

You can get involved by making a donation. Checks made payable to "The Elves" should be sent to Bill Alberta, 751 Elm Street Ext., Ithaca. We have absolutely no overhead costs for this program; every penny goes to help the kids.  You can learn more at elves.cornell.edu.”

I’d like to suggest that we all consider helping a classmate to help others by making a donation to “The Elves”.  Send a check, made payable to “The Elves”, to Bill Alberta, 751 Elm Street, Ithaca, NY 14850. The Elves are also on Facebook at “Cornell Elves”. The Elves also have a Back to School Backpack Program!

Way to go Bill!

Before shoving off on the 2022 4th Annual Class of '64 Canoe & Kayak Regatta on the Delaware River, Bill Alberta, Tom Kulesza and Gerry Wormuth enjoy a hearty breakfast at the Hancock House. Lee Woodmansee and Dixie Coe were dry docked. John Reed and Joe Iozzi routed from the shore. Denny Swartout was expected later in the afternoon.

...and after the regatta, a well deserved Champaign toast.

8/22/22

Speaking of Gerry Wormuth and Bill Alberta they showed up at Joe Iozzi's house to make roof repairs after Iozzi told Alberta on the phone of what he discovered after returning from Albany on Aug.5.
Gerry and Bill arrived on Monday one hour after the insurance adjuster with tool belts and supplies ready to go. I can't thank them enough for all they did to put my life back in order. JAI

The clock and plaque, in Honor of Helen and Wellington Lester, has been installed at the school. Thank you to all that contributed. The Class of 1964 is the best!

The clock to hang at the front door of HCS (replacing the clock the class gifted HCS in 1964) has finally been ordered.
It is solar powered with correct time updated from a satellite. No wires. I hope it lasts as long as the last one. I don't think anyone will be around to replace it again in 50 years.

The clock and plaque should be installed in about 1-2 months. Cost was just under $1,250.00. We had to temporarily steal from the Flower Fund to pay both clock and plaque vendors. We are expecting one more anonymous donation which will replenish the Flower Fund to nearly $400.00. We already have $10 in the kitty for next year's "Helen and Welling Lester Scholarship Fund". It will be for any graduating HCS student regardless of intention to attend college.

Word has reached us Ronnie Karcher has died. The following is his obit from Henderson-Biedekapp Funeral Home. There  is  no present plan for services;

Ronald A. Karcher, formerly of Orlando, FL and Starlight, PA, most recently residing in Johnson City, NY, died on Monday, September 20, 2021 at Wilson Medical Center in Johnson City, NY. He was born on February 11, 1943 in Deposit, NY, the son of Harold O. and Ruth J. (Shanly) Karcher.

He grew up on his family’s farm in Scott Center, PA and attended Hancock Central School in Hancock, NY. As a young man, Ronnie enjoyed racing stock cars; and later made his living as a skilled auto and machine mechanic.

Ronnie married Patricia (Patty) Diehl in 1989, and they resided in Starlight, PA until her death in 2006. Ron later relocated to Orlando, FL, where he lived until May of this year.

In addition to his parents, Ron was predeceased by his wife, Patty, two brothers: Harold and Vaughn, his twin sister, Ruth Ann Geer, who died in April of this year; and his beloved dog, Queenie. He is survived by several nieces and nephews, in addition to many special friends and poker buddies in Florida and the Northeast. His hearty laugh and delicious baked goods, including his famous chocolate chip cookies, will be missed by all those who loved him.

Services will be announced at a later date.

At the 2009 class reunion at French Woods, Ronnie can be seen in the picture front row, far right.

Masters Of The Delaware met Wednesday, Sept.15, 2021 for the 3rd Annual Delaware River Regatta. Tom Kulesza provided champagne, Bill Alberta a place to sleep, and Gerry Wormuth, Dixie Coe and Dennis Swartwout provided the laughs. The weather held, and a good time was had by all.

Joe Iozzi met last week with the acting superintendent of HCS about the Lester clock. Superintendent Daughtery, who had been our primary contact, is on a leave of absence. After 2 years we finally received approval on the installation of the clock, but still need to finalize the inscription, and placement of the plaque. The next school board meeting is Sept. 20, at which time, final approval on everything should be complete. This is the proposed clock.

The clock is a solar clock with time updated from a satellite. No wires. It is 24" in diameter.
A plaque will be located near the clock. It's placement will be exactly where the original was located over 50 years ago, over the middle front door of the school. We have contacted the clock company in California to get an updated price and shipping cost which will probably be more than it was two years ago. We'll cross that bridge when we get to it. The proposed inscription will read: A gift from the Class of 1964 In Honor of Helen and Wellington Lester.

The Delaware River Regatta for 2021 was all wet this year. Weather, and a rising river prevented anyone from taking to the waves. Electricity was lost on the first night during a horrendous storm, and it was down hill from there. 5 of the crew did manage to take a tour of the Joel Hill Saw Mill in Lookout, PA. on Tuesday. It was very good.
Dennis Swartout, predicted a washout and didn't make the trip from Mass. Dale Whitmore had other problems and was a no show. Dixie Coe missed the saw mill tour Tuesday, Bocce Ball on Monday, but did make the important events, lunch and dinner on Monday.
Some of us did manage to see Rose White at the Hancock House Hotel during lunch Monday, and Vernon Rooney was having lunch at the Red Barn in Equinunk where we had lunch on Tuesday.

We'll make another attempt at the river later this summer. Watch for a date.

Update:
I was at the river with my family between Sunday and Thursday of this week. We took the trip from Hancock to the cottage and one from the cottage to Buckingham Access. Got snagged a little bit on first run but not at all on the way to Buckingham.

Does anyone have Bill Shield's email address? I want to invite him ASAP.

Just to repeat my invitation, you are welcome to spend the night at the cottage on the 12th and/or the 13th.

Gerry & Mary Wormuth are kindly providing food for the 12th.

I hope we can kayak on both the 12th & 13th. If the weather is crappy on the 12th the 13th can be our backup.

See you all soon!

It has happened yet again. Charlie White has broken his hip at his assisted living apartment in Binghamton. He is currently in the Ideal rehab facility in Endicott. Joe Iozzi spoke to his doctor Wednesday, April 14. As most of you know Chuck had a stroke during a brain aneurysm operation in Albany about 15 years ago, and has been living in the Ideal assisted living facility since. He has developed a UTI so that's not good. I will post here when more is known. We all wish Chuck a quick and complete recovery. Here's Chuck's address while he's in rehab, which unfortunately, will be for a while. He no longer has a UTI. He is improving.

We've learned that Helen Hathaway, and members of Pat Brown/family have Covid. Pat's family is hanging in there with mild symptoms. Helen has had complications, and was sent to a hospital. I don't have more specifics, or a hospital address for Helen, but will post when I get one. Update- Helen is doing better. Her husband asks we send cards to the house instead of hospital. Updated address is below. We wish them both a speedy, and full recovery. Let them know you're thinking of them.

You may send cards, or letters for Pat Brown and/or Helen Hathaway to:

More bad news to report. John Hoffman has passed away at her home in Latham, NY. Joan was at the 2014 reunion at the Town Square.

The class will be making a donation in Joan's memory to the Lady of Assumption Church in Latham, NY. There is no other immediate family except for cousins. Interment will take place in Hancock at a later date.

We will let you know.

Yes, My cousin John Orchard passed away this past summer. His mom survives him and lives in Middletown, NY. Her name is Marie Orchard. I have no other information and have not seen an obituary posted anywhere. I think John lived in NJ for quite a while, and has a daughter. I wish I could offer more.

An update on Mrs. Lester. First of all, she wanted to thank everyone in the class for the flowers we sent, and for those of you that sent her cards.

She is recuperating slowly, but is able to walk a short distance with a walker. Her spirits have improved and she expects to be home by Spring. She is 93 and the process is slow. I know we all wish her the best, and a speedy, complete recovery.

Here is her temporary address for sending cards and her phone number at the facility:

We are sorry to hear of the passing of Brian Lepro. He died on December 10, 2020 of a heart attack. We have not learned arrangements as of yet. We are inquiring into some type of remembrance in the  Hancock Town Square, which is brother designed. We have money left in the flower fund, and Lana Rood has added her donation to the kiddy.

Updated; We will give a Brian Lepro STEM Award in June 2021 to a deserving HCS student. With $50 from the Flower Fund, and donations already received, we will have $196.40. This will match the $196.40 given for the John Cappiello Art Award last year. I'll keep you updated. (See post below dated 9/18/2020)

Thanks to Pat Brown, Lana Rood & Clifford Crosby for their generous donations.

If you wish to contribute send checks to;

Mrs. Lester was operated on last Wednesday for a broken femur. She is now up and standing (with some pain) and is recouping well. I still don't have a room number for her. She was moved from the ICU yesterday. Lourdes Hospital address is in a post below. The last time I spoke with her in the ER she thanked the class of '64 for her flowers which she received shortly after being admitted to the hospital. She should be up doing the rumba in no time.

Mrs. Lester took a fall at her home Monday evening, and has broken her femur bone. Joe Iozzi spoke to her yesterday in the ER at Lourdes Hospital, and said she sounded remarkably well and in very good spirits. She was getting ready to ask for a little more morphine at the time. She will be operated on to fix the bone break on Thursday. I know we all wish her the best, and a quick recovery. The class of '64 has sent one dozen red roses to her room. Her temporary address at Lourdes follows. I don't have her room number:

I'm sure we all have good memories of Pod. Below, on the far wall, Pod (center) enjoys a pre-dinner drink at our first reunion in 1969. As he would have said, "A good time was had by all".

The John E. Cappiello Art Scholarship Award, along with a check for $196.40 was presented to Spenser Layman, compliments from the Class of 1964 in memory of Wellington Lester.

Mrs. Lester presented the award and check.

The John E. Cappiello Art Scholarship was first awarded shortly after John's death, the first to die from the class of '64.

Much thanks to Gerry Wormuth for his generosity in making this award happen.

To all my old friends as well as all those that read this, as a retired epidemiologist I urge everyone to heed what the health department is saying. We're all anxious to get back to normal and it will happen. We just need a ton of patients.

I have met with the school principal regarding the "Clock". As they are doing 8 million dollars worth of improvements to the school, we have been included in the Design phase of the project. With the current virus frenzy, the school will be closed for an indefinite period of time, and the Design phase has been pushed back yet again. Hopefully, by the end of the summer we will have our old spot back on the brick wall for the new Lester Clock.

In related news, the Helen and Wellington Lester STEM Scholarship will be presenting a check for $196.40 from the class of '64 sometime in May or June this year. Mrs. Lester will picking the recipient.

Clock update;  Joe Iozzi met with the Terry Dougherty of HCS. Donating of a clock, its size, and any inscriptions, or plaques must be approved by the school board. He said he will make the board aware of our proposal at the upcoming board meeting. I get the feeling this is going to be a 3 month process. That will put us into the winter which will probably delay installation. That remains to be seen.

It does looks like we will have enough money "left over" to make a $196.40 contribution to the Helen and Wellington Lester Scholarship Fund, as well as purchasing the clock.

After receiving generous donations from Joyce Ripple Wuorio, Gerry Mackin, Gerry Wormuth, and Pat Brown, our clock fund stands at $1,400 in cash and pledges.

He is resting in recovery at Lourdes Hospital. He is awake alert, and very hungry.

We still have no new news to report on Andre Runne, or Gerry Mackin's condition.
